THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH EDUCATION ON MATERNAL HEALTHCARE DECISION-MAKING IN SAPELE, DELTA STATE

5,000.00

Background: Maternal mortality remains a critical public health challenge in Nigeria, with Delta State recording disproportionately high rates attributable to poor maternal healthcare decision-making. Community-based health education (CBHE) has been recognized as a promising strategy to improve maternal health outcomes by equipping women, families, and communities with the knowledge and agency to make informed healthcare decisions. This study investigated the impact of community-based health education on maternal healthcare decision-making among women of reproductive age in Sapele, Delta State.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted for this study. The study population comprised women of reproductive age (15–49 years), nurses, and community health workers in Sapele. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents selected through a systematic random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency distribution methods and presented in tables and charts.

Results: Findings revealed that 74.2% of respondents had been exposed to community-based health education programmes. Exposure to such programmes was significantly associated with improved maternal healthcare decision-making, including increased utilization of antenatal care services (81.7%), preference for skilled birth attendance (78.3%), and enhanced awareness of maternal danger signs (86.7%). Key barriers to effective maternal healthcare decision-making included financial constraints (63.3%), cultural and traditional beliefs (52.5%), and limited access to healthcare facilities (47.5%). Women who had participated in CBHE were significantly more likely to make timely healthcare decisions during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Conclusion: Community-based health education has a measurable and positive impact on maternal healthcare decision-making in Sapele, Delta State. The study recommends sustained investment in community health education programmes, integration of culturally sensitive strategies, and active involvement of community stakeholders to further improve maternal health outcomes.
